The speaker we had invited for 16th May had to back out a couple of weeks before the event. Doreen managed to find a replacement speaker, so that was fine. On the morning of 16th this speaker phoned to say that he would not be able to come along after all!!!!! Thinking cap on – who do we know who could step in at the last moment, or should we have a quiz evening. Doreen decided to phone Susan Grimshaw who instantly agreed to step in. Within 15 minutes Susan phoned back to say that her talk would be on ‘some interesting people’. And a very interesting evening it was. The interesting people Susan talked about were Gino Watkins, leader of the British arctic route expedition; Augustine Courtauld who, as part of that expedition, stayed behind when the others left. He expected to be there for two months, but it stretched to five! Next came Wilfred Grenfell, a missionary to Newfoundland and Labrador; Kathleen Ferrier; Richard 111, and the ‘terrible knitters of Dent’. You must get Susan to tell you about the knitters some time, they were (and still are) very talented people of both sexes and all ages. Thanks you so much Susan for helping us out so promptly and with such an interesting talk.
At our first meeting on 2nd June, Richard Poad will be speaking to us on his unusual subject – ‘Are You Married Or Do You Live In Maidenhead?’ This should be a highly amusing evening. Have you been to see the Centre? It represents Maidenhead present and past and is very well presented. There are some most interesting ideas for gifts from our town on display. Bring as many friends as you can to enjoy a hilarious evening. Being our first meeting of the month there will also be a bring and buy stall.
On Sunday 13th June the Friendship Group will be taking the service. There will be a fund raising cake stall in the aid of the Church. Please put your name on the board in the Link with a list of your cakes etc. Bring your purse with you!
On 16th June Colin Oakes will speak to us on the Secret City. This will be a fascinating evening too, led by a most able speaker.
Our next get together will be on Thursday 1st July, when a number of us will be going to Wintershall to see the ‘English Oberamergau’ equivalent of the life of Christ. This should be a spectacular and memorable experience.
A date for your Diary – on 21st July Morag & Gordon
Campbell have invited us to join them for an evening of fun and laughter in their gorgeous garden. Anyone bringing their swimming costume?
