The Friendship Group meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month at 8.00pm. It is held in either the Hall or Room 1 at the Church in West Street, Maidenhead, unless otherwise indicated. Everyone is welcome.
I apologise for the delay in releasing our 2012 programme, but I hope that by the time you read this you will already have made a firm note in your diary of at least some of the events!
Our first gathering of the year in January was for Geoff Roberts with “The building and restoration of Westminster Abbey”. We had a good audience, which included several visitors who we look forward to seeing again. Geoff had been involved in the last four years of the restoration project, and you can see his initials in the new stained glass window that commemorates the restoration. His close
involvement really made the slides, talk and small exhibition come alive – it was excellent and fascinating. Next time you have the chance to visit Westminster Abbey – take your binoculars with you to look at the carved animals on the buttresses – there are many surprises. The faith, planning, fundraising, skills etc needed for such a huge project on the first build and the subsequent restoration was amazing. The task we have at West Street, by comparison, is just a walk in the park!
On Wednesday, 1 February at 8pm, we will learn about a different restoration project when Allan Machon will tell us about The Didcot Railway Centre. I think most of us have a nostalgic soft spot for steam trains, so hope to see a good audience for this evening and again some new faces – all welcome!
Wednesday, 15 February at 7.45pm, we will be joining the Grimm Players at the Desborough Suite, Town Hall for their production of Sweet Charity. Pam Breen has charge of the sign up list in the link, with last orders to join the party on Wednesday, 1 February. Again – all welcome!
