9 Superstars 9th - 13th August
Just over a year ago now Jo came up to me and said next year for Holiday Club why don’t you write it yourself and base it around the football World Cup that will have just have taken place. Why not I think at the time and take up the challenge using the theme of football and countries playing in the World Cup and from this Superstars was born.
So what was it all about, we began with a couple of games and then the week
started off looking at rules, discovering the rules of football and then the Ten
Commandments and then coming up with our own for the week, our country of
focus was South Africa and we made some cave drawings and Jewellery and
then each group was set the challenge of coming up with a team name and designing a poster for it, which they were allowed to finish off the following morning. On Tuesday was tried a new experiment for holiday club and did some cooking which despite appearance during the mixing process came out quite well and was enjoyed over the following days. It was a traditional South African dish melk tert (see Linda for the recipe if you’re interested – some already have), we followed this by looking at languages and how in football rules were important if you couldn’t speak the same language as you still understood what was happening and then looked at this in the Bible with the Tower of Babel and Pentecost, followed with the buildings of our own towers of Babel which
ended with a heap of junk on the floor, for craft we made Dream catchers
from Native America. The next day we began with Italy making our very
own pizza flags, went onto discover about positions in a football team and
how we needed each one for it to work just as the Church is like a body and
then enjoyed a few team games. Thursday saw us start off making instruments which were later used during our song along with some dancing from our couple of stretcher people that our teams had come together to make early for a game and we discover about how the friends lowered the paralysed man through the roof so that he could get to Jesus and making our models to tell the story (you may have seen them in the link) and doing some crafts from Mexico and Greece.
Finally on the last day we looked at league tables and how God doesn’t mind where we come, he loves us whether we are first or last, discovering the example of Zaccheaus and how he changed his ways with this knowledge, finishing off the week with one last team game where the teams made a
marble run with straws and then relaxing with Hama beads before all enjoying a sausage sizzle.
Was it a success? Well feedback of “can we have one next week and the week after”, “I wasn’t sure if I wanted to come yesterday, but today I really wanted to come back”, parents telling me that their
