7 Jottings from the July Church Meeting at Maidenhead URC

This meeting was held in the Sanctuary after the morning service on July 18th. 27 members attended.

The following members and friends were mentioned as in need of our prayers and concern: Maisie Dennis, Glenys Church, Jess Nicholls and Doreen Whati. Atim Laber is continuing her medical studies in Vanuatu, and the baptism of Ambre and Mathieu Raharijaona had been enjoyed during the morning service.

Concern was expressed about the trespassers in our car park, especially in the light of the small fire which had

occurred the previous night. The problems of security of our premises and safety of our members on the one hand, and the welfare of these homeless people on the other, is a dilemma for the church.

Bob reported on the recent prayer afternoon and James and Jean are planning to start a series of Elders group lunches in the autumn. There is no final decision yet on whether to hold a service at the church on Boxing Day 2010.

Reports were received from the various groups within the church. Elders’ elections will take place in the autumn and Owin’ will take a sabbatical from October to December. Adrian Bulley is stepping down as Moderator of the URC. The committee chairpersons will look at the church membership list and try to include more people in the work of the committees.

James reported that he is considering stepping down as Church Life and Mission chairman as he is now working hard as Church Secretary. He also let us know of early plans for the 350th anniversary in 2012.

From Churches together came a report on the Street Angels project and Alice promoted the holiday club for children, taking place in August.

Gordon displayed figures for the state of our finances for the first half of the year. He warned that money would be tight well into next year, and appealed for ideas to help the Elders to set priorities for spending. The office buildings on the Market Street side of our car park are due for redevelopment and Martin has held discussions with them.

Owin’ gave a brief report of the URC General Assembly and advised that the full report is available from Linda for

anyone who wishes to see it.
